Johnston Gate Green Ash #5
This bowl was handcrafted from a Green Ash tree (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) that shaded Johnston Gate from within Harvard Yard. Johnston Gate has long served as the main entrance to the Yard and leads directly to the John Harvard Statue. In 1889, Samuel Johnston donated funds to create an artistic steel gate, replacing the wooden fence that once stood in its place. Following his donation, classmates and other graduating classes were inspired by Johnston’s example and funded many of the gates that now stand and beautify the campus. This bowl measures 9 1/2” wide by 4 1/2” inches tall.
Also included:
A card explaining the history of this tree on campus
Decorative packaging
Standard engraving featuring the Harvard Veritas logo, or optional custom engraving on the underside of the bowl
